Constant Dullaart
‘Romantic Software Dialect’
Constant Dullaart (1979, NL) studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. Trained as a video-artist he has become an ultimate contemporary-culture performer.
Dullaart sees the internet as an alternative presentation space. By editing online forms of presentations and by re-contextualizing ‘found’ material he creates a new found (online) exhibition space.
Pioneering video artists from the ‘70s were experimenting on the technical possibilities of the medium. Like a true web anthropologist Dullaart takes the next step by bringing virtual reality to life by reinterpreting the beauty of layman terms or default settings.
According to Dullaart, the tools and filters are as important for the usage of depicting representation: ‘Technological tools can be used or abused. The user will find out what that is’.
In the exhibition ‘Romantic Software Dialect’, online alterations and user interface options collide. An ethical minefield so to say, because technological devolpments have no morals.
As cookie-cuttered as it looks, ‘Healing’ (2010), renders this phenomenon. By using Adobe Photoshop manipulation effects, Dullaart covers or erases the horror of natural disasters. As a result they appear to be spherical and romantic dreamvisions, hiding any evidence of the deep-layered disaster they are supposed to show.
‘Romantic Software Dialect’ shows the most recent work of Constant Dullaart on technical alterations. Maybe this is one of the last exhibitions with an explanation, because lucky for all post-web artists” ‘The more people on the web, the easier the dialect translates to the physical space.’
Romantic Software Dialect opens on September 25 at 5 pm.
Constant Dullaart’s work has been exhibited internationally at the Centre Pompidou, Art in General and MWNM gallery in New York, ICA London, NMAI, Apple, W139 and the Stedelijk Museum.
